#3 GRAND DELIVERABLE: WEEK 6
This week our two main objectives were the following: To choose one of the solutions proposed last week, and to show our counterpart Gonzalo García, (Manager of the Technical Division at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development – Parque Metropolitano de Santiago), the process and the solutions proposed to receive its return.
A brief summary of the process so far:
When we began our research, we focused on the elderly who attended the park, so we did not find any apparent problems in this sector. Santiago’s metropolitan parks generally offer everything that is important to an elderly person.
Therefore, as already mentioned, in a previous post on this blog, we had to refocus the research, so we decided to approach the problem from the elderly who did not attend the park. From this one, we noticed that the main problem was not that they didn’t go to the park, but that the problem started a step backwards.
Based on this new problem detected, we carried out a more focused investigation, from which we were able to obtain our main insights:
As the image above shows, the most relevant are the following: not sense of ownership city
- Treating as elderly separates from community
- Interaction moments are very important
- This allowed us to reformulate our opportunity as follows
Elderly need safe and beneficial experience with other generations to change their attitude on going on and staying at the parks.
Thanks to this long process of going back and forth to define both the problem and the opportunity, it allowed us to develop a more accurate solution. However, arriving at a solution to the problem was difficult because it took us a long time to contemplate all the aspects we had to consider.
Finally we got it and we were able to start developing it, asking ourselves questions and starting to analyze every part and gear of the system.
To conclude, in our meeting with the counterpart, the return was useful and positive, which will help us to develop.

CREATION WEEKS: WEEK 5
This new week, due to the famous holiday of May 1st, our number of hours of theory class per week was noticeably lower. However, this has been favorable for the team, as we were able to carry out more intense days of teamwork, and we optimized the times.
The organization of this week starts by working on different separate tasks, and we have our first meeting by skype.
This meeting was our first experience as a team by skype, which allowed us to realize that (perhaps because of the language, or the methodology of this project), that it is not so useful to generate ideas or analyze information, but it is good to share things that we do individually and organize.
Then, we met again as usual, and the group dynamics developed normally again.
In these face-to-face team meetings, due to the fact that in the previous week we had carried out all the necessary field research so far, we have focused on analyzing and working with what has been generated, in addition to carrying out some new search for papers or the like.
Therefore, some of the tasks that we have been carrying out were: interview deduction, coding and decoding of interviews, etc. in order to prepare the information for analysis.
After a first analysis, we have managed to draw a brief journeymap, and identify the different archetypes, which was very useful for the time of designing a solution.
Parallel to these pre-established tasks or tools, new questions begin to arise which make us reconsider new papers, review interviews or analyses that we have been carrying out at the beginning of the research, in order to find answers to new questions.
After gathering and analyzing all the information, we have managed to discover the insights, and the requirements necessary to project possible solutions…
In this instance, we have not had much time to propose solutions because the analyses have taken us longer than expected, and the dedication to the development of possible solutions has not been enough…
However, the first attempt has potential to develop, which we believe will improve over the course of this week.

CHANGING THE FOCUS: WEEK 4
On Monday and Wednesday we had classes of teacher Constanza on Puc. The students made a presentation of their projects, and solutions. We had meetings on Domo, in which Constanza went to see each team’s progress and in this week we had to work on the focus field research.
On Tuesday we had a breakfast, organized by team 2. On the breakfast we had one activity: A student had to make questions to other student (like favorite hobbies, food, color and band) and the interviewees couldn’t be from your team and they had to be from different countries. The objective of this activity was to show us that we are all connected.
After the breakfast we had another activity. The objective was to find the good and the bad points of our group. It was important for everyone knows in what points can help the group, and where can be better.
The activity on Tuesday was in a diferent place called If Blanco Recoleta. This space is formed by different companies and we worked in aguas Lab.
IF Blanco Recoleta- Aguas Lab
In this week we had to choose one opportunity, and decide the focus of our research, but we changed the focus and decided to work with people who don’t go to the parks. Until this moment, our opportunity is: To help elderly leave their comfort zone by creating a positive and beneficial experience around getting to the park.
Next week we have a presentation with the focus and the ideas to solve the problem.

THE FIRST FORMAL PRESENTATION: WEEK 3
On Monday we had classes with the teacher Constanza. The students, of regular classes, make a presentation about your project using the design techniques. Constanza show to us your design materials, like specifically papers and pen.
On Tuesday, we had classes on Duoc San Joaquin. The morning starded with a breakfast prepared by the group 1. It was a good moment to meeting all the students of LaPassion and have conversations. During the breakfast, the team 1, made one activity for us. Evebody exposed your ideas about your challenge, related with public transportation. After the breakfast, we had class with teacher Andrea. She explain for us, how find the opportunies to resolve the problem and how we can do the “Personas”, description of the people of interviews. After the class, we went for domo, and discussed about the personas of our interviews.
Activity during the breakfast.
On Wednesday morning, the focus of group were make the first formal presentation, with 3 opportunities to resolve the problem for the next day. We discussed a lot, and found 3 opportunities for our challenge. They are:
- Improve wellbeing by increasing community and Family interaction in the parks.
- Improve wellbieng by evolving the elders interaction with nature.
- Increase the usage of the parks by enhancing the knowledge about the parks.
On Thursday morning we finished the last detais of presentation, and in the afternoon we made a presentation of the teachers about our challenge and ours opportunities. The teachers Andrea and Catarina made consederations about the presentations, made suggestions like: separate the good and bad key factors for elders, put subtitles in the boards, reconsider some topics and less confusing drawings. They said good points like: good introducing of the group, good narrative, next steps of research. All this considerations contributed for the growth of the group’s work.

GATHERING DATA: WEEK 2
On Monday we went to another class of teacher Constanza where we had a common class with her students and then we had an hour just for LAPASSION students, in which she taught us how to make a research and reduce our focus of the project. After that, our group made a reunion, so we can decide which questions we should prepare for the interview with the counterpart on the next day.
On Tuesday, we had class with Laura Lattanzi on DUOC San Joaquín, in which we learned to make an ethnographic investigation and how to develop an interview focusing on the user, following some steps. After that, we had a meeting with our counterpart Gonzalo García, the coordinator of Santiago’s Metropolitan Parks. In this meeting we discovered much more about how we have to work and what the problem they want us to solve is.
On Wednesday we had a meeting on the dome during the morning, to work on some things about the project, now that we have more clearly our main problem. We created our formulary, worked on the questions for the interviews with the primary and secondary people and organized our presentation for the next day.
On Thursday we made the “informal presentation” to Andrea and Laura, so they could know how was the development of our project and they gave us some tips of how to work from there.
On Friday we went to 3 different parks (Parque de las esculturas, Parque Araucano and Parque Juan Pablo II) and on Sunday, we went to Parque Quinta Normal to make the interviews. It was great because we could meet incredible people, make good interviews and at the same time get to know the parks in Santiago – that for Beatriz, Camila, João and Joni was perfect because they could work and ‘tour’ at the time.
In conclusion, this second week was full of work, but it was gratifying to see and make this project create life, and we are so proud to be part of this innovated way to develop a solution to this kind of problem.

THE JOURNEY BEGINS: WEEK 1
On monday April 2th our Lapassion project started with Kickstart at DUOC UC. There we were divided to teams and given the challenges. Our team number 5 was given the challenge “To understand and propose a system or solution that
increases the urban park network by the elderly.”
After the kickstart we went to teacher Constanza’s class and we learned how to make a presentation. She gave us a lot of tips and examples, so we could have a basic knowledge about how to develop our project and make it better.
Besides, we could meet the laboratories in which we are going to be working and have a brief notion of the campus in PUC de Chile.
On Wednesday we were able to see the presentations of the teacher Constanza’s students and see the application of what we learned on monday’s class. After the presentations and comments of the teacher and her students, we had a class about the tools, requirements, background, references and marginal practices that we must know to develop a project.
On Thursday, we went to DUOC UC Campus Antônio Varas to our first class with teacher Andrea. There, we were able to know each student from LAPASSION better because of the dynamics and we were able to share our best qualities and weaknesses.
After that, we had a class about each part of the development of a project from the refraiming to the prototype.
We put what we learned in practice, trying to solve a problem that was given to us. All the groups had to solve a problem: “design a solution that allows significantly improve the experience of the haircuts for dogs”.
